MATTHEW LAND

Matt Land is a Member at Waldron Tate Bowen Land LLC. Matt’s practice focuses on commercial real estate and business transactions, as well as appellate litigation and complex general litigation. The modern practice of law has led many attorneys to singularly focus on either transactions or litigation. However, Matt views these not as disparate disciplines, but two sides of a single coin. This understanding, that the practice of law is an integrated whole, came from his varied experiences as a lawyer, a business owner, and a soldier in the United States Army.

Among his most notable successes, Matt served as trial counsel in a case involving oppressed minority shareholders of a corporation against a majority shareholder in which he and his team, including partner Brandon Tate, were able to achieve a jury verdict of $13.7 Million for breaches of corporate fiduciary duties along with the setting aside of a trust holding corporate shares.

After law school, Matt began his practice at the Indiana Supreme Court as Judicial Clerk to the Honorable Justice Geoffrey G. Slaughter. It was here that he had the privilege of being trained by one of Indiana’s great appellate judges and practitioners. Every day was spent debating, deciding, and then drafting the future of Indiana’s legal landscape. However, Matt went to law school to advise clients—to counsel them. The honor of helping to decide the law for all Hoosiers was too far removed from his original goal of helping individual clients.

After leaving the Indiana Supreme Court, Matt joined a large national law firm’s Commercial Real Estate group. Here he learned how business transactions are done at the highest level with a national firm of historic Indianapolis roots. During his tenure at a large national law firm, Matt was part of more than a billion dollars of transactions. However, the nature of a national practice brought with it two consequences that he wanted to avoid. First, he wanted clients that were more akin to who he was before law school—a hardworking business owner that grew something out of nothing. Second, at a national firm, the transaction attorney steps away when trouble arises and hands the reigns over to the litigator. Matt wanted to counsel his client no matter if they were forming a deal at the conference table or saving one in court.

With the lessons of the Supreme Court and Big Law in hand, Matt decided to create the practice he always wanted—a practice that takes the sophisticated nuance of a national transactions practice, tempers it with the practicality of an entrepreneur, and with the loyalty and duty of a soldier, stays by your side when it is time to go to court and fight.
